bomberpunk.com presents...
the legend of "verse chorus verse"
roughly ten years ago in 1994, fans of nirvana were able to get some seriously rare tracks
via a bootleg series dubbed Outcesticide, released by Blue Moon records. i thought i
had all of them until i found out there were currently [at least] eight releases, plus a
phoney OUT4 which was not released on Blue Moon, but did indeed have different rare material
so is just as good to have as the "official" bootlegs. anyway, on OUT2 and OUT3 were two
different live recording of an ultra rare song called in his hands. for years i have
been juggling two songs being my favorite nirvana tracks, this being one of them. the other
one was called verse chorus verse, or so i thought. after years of research, it was
determined by an online nirvana fan club that verse chorus verse was actually titled
sappy, and that in his hands doesn't exist in the nirvana catalogue. yes, the
track that appears on the No Alternative compilation CD is indeed called sappy.
somehow, someone fucked up. and it just caught on. it was also determined that the song
previously known as in his hands is actually called verse chorus verse, and
was never recorded in a studio. ten years later, we know better; the nirvana box, with
the lights out, is released in the united states just in time for the 2004 end-of-year
holidays, and includes a studio [session] version of verse chorus verse. for a huge
fan of the song like me, this was big news, as i was finally able to hear a clearer
recording and be able to decipher the lyrics. was it a perfect version of the song? almost.
according to sources, this studio track is older than the two live tracks found on OUT2 and
OUT3. in fact, it was the second or third time that krist and dave had even heard it and/or
played along. the bass track on this cut kills me, because compared to the later live
versions, it's shit and is missing the awesome eerieness that i thought made ther breakdown
in the middle of the song so damn cool. so, now i present to you MY version of the song,
with the cool bassline that should've been there. i would have done this track years and
years ago, but i never knew what the hell kurt was singing. see the stab wounds in his
hands? i don't think so, Blue Moon.
